El Mirador vs Tikal: Which One to Choose for Your Trip
"Tikal or El Mirador? Compare access, time, effort and experience at Petén's two great Maya cities and choose the one that suits you."

If you come to Petén with the Maya World in mind, sooner or later you will face the same question: Tikal or El Mirador? Both are huge Maya cities, both are in the jungle, and both leave you speechless. But they are very different trips. Here is the honest comparison so you can choose well.

Tikal: the classic that never fails

Tikal is the most visited Maya city in Guatemala, and for good reason. Its temples rise above the jungle, with the Temple of the Great Jaguar and Temple IV dominating the landscape, and wildlife is everywhere: howler monkeys, toucans and sunrise breaking over a sea of trees.

It is easy to reach from Flores on a one-day tour, and there are options for everyone: watching sunrise from Temple IV after an early-morning departure, or ending the day with sunset over the jungle. It is the best option if it is your first time in Petén, if you are traveling with family, if you love photography, or if you have little time and want the complete Maya experience without complications.

El Mirador: the adventure few people live

El Mirador is something else. It is the largest Maya city ever built, with the La Danta pyramid, and it lies so deep in the jungle that for years it could only be reached after days of hiking. Today the practical way to see it is by helicopter: you fly over the Maya Biosphere Reserve and in a matter of minutes you are landing in a remote place that almost no one reaches.

It is a tour of about six hours, with a minimum of three passengers per flight (you can join a group on the date you want). It is the option if you have already visited Tikal, if you are looking for something exclusive and out of the ordinary, or if you want to tell the story of a trip few people can tell.

The quick comparison

  • Access: Tikal is reached by land from Flores without a problem; El Mirador, in practice, is visited by helicopter.
  • Time: Tikal fits into one day with sunrise or sunset; El Mirador is about six hours of intense experience.
  • Effort: Tikal is comfortable for almost anyone; El Mirador is pure adventure, although the helicopter saves you the multi-day hike.
  • Atmosphere: Tikal is famous and busy; El Mirador is remote, quiet and exclusive.
  • Ideal for: Tikal, a first trip, families and photographers; El Mirador, travelers looking for the extraordinary.

So, which one do I choose?

If it is your first time, you have one day and you want the classic postcard of the Maya World: Tikal. If you have already been to Tikal, or you want the most exclusive adventure in Petén: El Mirador. And if you can, do both on different days: they are so different that they do not repeat each other, they complement each other.
