There is a moment, about twenty minutes after taking off from Flores, when the jungle seems to open up and appears before you: a stone mass emerging from the green canopy like an island in a sea of trees. It is La Danta, one of the largest pyramids of the ancient world, and you are about to land at its feet.
El Mirador was the largest Mayan city ever built, even before the splendor of Tikal, and for centuries it remained swallowed by the jungle of northern Petén. Getting there was always a feat reserved for expeditions of several days on foot... until now.
Our helicopter tour leaves Flores in the morning. The flight over the Mayan Biosphere Reserve is a spectacle in itself: an endless green ocean, dotted with wetlands and rivers, until the pilot points ahead and the structures of El Mirador appear among the trees.
Upon landing, a local guide takes you along the ancient roads to La Danta. Climbing its terraces is rising above the jungle itself: from the top, the neighboring pyramids appear among the greenery as far as the eye can see. It is the postcard that no other destination in Guatemala can offer.
Six hours later you are back in Flores, in time for the sunset on the island, with a story that very few travelers in the world can tell.
