There is a time when Tikal does not belong to tourists, but to the jungle. It is three in the morning in Flores when the transport picks you up: the island is sleeping, the lake is still and the only light is from the streetlights on the boardwalk. An hour later you are at the entrance to the Tikal National Park, and the walk begins.

The path to Temple IV is done with a flashlight. At that time the jungle sounds different: the crunch of leaves underfoot, some nocturnal bird, and from time to time the distant roar of a howler monkey that seems to come out of the darkness itself. It takes about 40 minutes to walk among giant trees until you reach the base of the highest structure in Tikal.

The climb to Temple IV is done along its wooden staircase, in the dark, step by step. Up, 70 meters high, the viewpoint is above the jungle canopy. And then you wait. The sky begins to change color in the east, the treetops are drawn in black against a gray that turns orange, and suddenly the sun appears over a green ocean that never ends. In the distance the crests of Temples I, II and III appear through the fog. Howler monkeys—the true owners of the dawn—provide the soundtrack.

After dawn the adrenaline subsides and the second part begins: the archaeological tour with a guide. With the park still almost empty, we tour the Plaza Mayor, the Temple of the Great Jaguar, Temple II and the Mundo Perdido area, while the jungle fully awakens: toucans, spider monkeys, coatis. At mid-morning there is a break for breakfast, and around 10:00 AM we begin the return journey. At 11:30 you are back in Flores, in time to have lunch on the island with one of the best stories a traveler can tell.

4 tips

  1. Go to bed early. Departure is at 3:00 AM sharp. Eat a light dinner, leave everything ready the night before and sleep as much as you can: you will appreciate it on the way up.
  2. Carry a light layer. Above Temple IV, before the sun rises, a fresh wind blows that cannot be felt below in the jungle. A sweatshirt or windbreaker makes the difference between enjoying the wait or shivering.
  3. Flashlight and shoes with grip. The walk and climb are completely in the dark. A headlamp leaves your hands free for the wooden stairs, and closed shoes with good soles prevent slipping in the early morning humidity.
  4. Silence and camera ready. The best minutes are just before dawn, when the howler monkeys begin their chorus. Keep quiet, have your camera at hand and let the jungle do the rest: it is the time with the fewest people and the best daylight throughout the park.
